I can’t bring myself to love the F-type. It killed one of my biggest automotive crushes. I admit the F-type is great, but honestly it is the “Eggsy” to the XK’s “Harry.” Likeable and could be a respectable replacement, but just doesn’t keep up the high class presentation while simultaneously killing little old ladies in a church.

I think the XK is more elegant...but I do love the F type

I completely agree the XK is the better looking car, the more elegant grand tourer, and it has an excellent V8 engine to match

Was driving in traffic behind an F type R last week. The sounds man, the sounds.

Drive one. It’s a fantastic machine

In fairness the XK was always going to die, F Type or not. The platform was over 15 years old and it needed replacing. Jag does have a new 2+2 in the works but they have less than zero capacity at the moment so it may be a while.

If I remember rightly, the F-Type is not designed to be a replacement nor a successor to the XK. Jaguar have a 2+2 up their sleeve for 2017, rumoured to be called the XR.

My biggest hope is that due to the F-type being a two seater, the XK gets the chassis and becomes a legitimate 4 seater like the Maserati Granturismo (which should be a new the same year). Oh, plus the Alfieri should be out right after the F-type refresh. I’m a Maserati/Jaguar guy and I love that their line ups will be directly competitive to one another in a few years.

This. And I just don't think it's as pretty as the AMG GT

Really?

Man, I can’t stand the XK.

Oh I know, I just hate that the things I love have breaks in their nameplates. Viper, NSX, now the XK.

I know, but every bit of production means better used cars to choose from for longer.

I don’t really think the F-Type is a worthy successor to the XK. It’s a brilliant machine, but it’s too small and too much of a sports car and not a GT to replace the XK.

They have the same 5.0L supercharged engine. The XK-R and RS just need that modern exhaust tuning.

Ha, I actually have something similar with the GT and SLS. I just want a GT styled as a $200k car I think. I know the design can go further.

Well I’m pretty odd. I think 2006 was like 1966 when it came to car design. Everything looks appealing to me that’s within that generation.

Thank you for telling me this, I am really trying to live by a “buy what you love” rather than “buy whatever wins the comparison tests.”

The F-Type is a great thing. It’s confidence incarnate. It doesn’t care what you think about it. What it cares about is driver-centric theater.

It’s not the kind of car you admire. It’s the kind of car you buy when you don’t need anyone else’s praise.

F-Type: “Oh sorry, I’m not elegant enough for you? Perhaps I’ll shed a tear about that from my underground lair.”

Yep, but it did show how outdated the XK was in every way. I need to get into one before I experience better, that way I won’t be disappointed in it.

I guess for me I wasn’t impressed because everything you just said isn’t the F-type being special, it’s the F-type being a Jag! As you progress up the performance ladder, the models always lose their elegance. They kind of go from British to American once they hit RS levels!

Having been able to throw one around an auto cross course I can say this. It is an amazing vehicle and I love everything about it.

Got to drive an XK the same day, would take the F-Type every day of the week.

I felt the same way until I drove one. The XK is much better looking though

I built the Land Rover/ Jag booth last year, I went to a couple shows to set it all up. We always get to bring the cars in the hall to place them and hook them up to power etc. So I pretty much drove all the cars, I really like the F Type. The XK feels too long and just big. Sure the engine is nice, but I may or may not have hooned the F through Moscone Center’s tunnels a bit and the sound that thing makes, very nice.

I don’t agree with that. British opulence is all about excess.

All opulence is about excess. I say American due to the fact that there is no attempt to make the excess have any form of subtlety. Time spent to appreciate form is very European where as understanding 95% of the picture at first glance is very American. The XK-RS and XF-RS do more of the later while their lower presentations stress the former.
